The fourth divisional chart of a horoscope is called D-4 or Turyamsa or Padamamsa. Each sign is divided into four equal parts of 7 degrees 90 minutes each. These parts occupy the angular (Kendra) positions from the sign occupied by it in D-1. Thus this chart is a Kendra chart. The kendras are places of Vishnu. This chart, therefore, stands for the happiness of all types. Parasara opines that destiny is seen from D-4.
Parasara Chaturthamsha (D-4)
The construction of this chart as per the Parasara method is as under
- Any planet/Lagna in the first part of a sign (0 degree-7degree 30minutes) remains in the sign occupied by it in the natal chart
- When a planet occupies the second part (7degree 30minutes to 15degree) of a sign, it moves to the 4th sign from that occupied by it in the natal chart
- Similarly, when occupying the third part (15degree to 22degree 30 minutes) it moves to the 7th sign from that occupied by it in natal
- Planet occupying the fourth part (22degree 30minutes to 30degree) moves to the tenth house from that occupied by it in the natal chart.

DEITIES of D-4
The four non-planetary presiding lords of the four parts of Chaturthamsa are Sanaka, Sananda, Sanata Kumar, and Sanatana respectively for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Chaturthamsa.
The lords of the D-4 divisions are sons of Brahma the creator. Lord Brahma created a life for the enjoyment of Lord Vishnu, who wanted to be many. Therefore, the four Kendra positions are Vishnu places. How happiness is acquired is governed by the lord of the D-4 in whose domain the planet is positioned. The general meaning of the names of the lords is given below. These are just one reference and the overall view of things depends on the complete horoscope.

He accepted his problems of life and lived with them without complaint.
- Sanat Kumar (Perpetually young): It means that there is perpetual happiness. Nobody can be young always. It may therefore mean that the person regains his youth again or he gains his happiness again. There has to be a loss of happiness and then only one can regain it. This division can give a loss of happiness. Acharya Rajneesh has Moon at 22degree 19minutes and is in D-4 of Sanat Kumar. He was born in mahadasa of Venus which is also placed in 3rd D-4. He lost his happiness and tried to regain it.
- Sanatana (Eternal): Happiness is permanent. There are not many changes. Whatever happiness is attained; it does not go down. The area of happiness is permanent and the native enjoys that throughout his life. Mulk Raj Anand was a writer and derived happiness from his passion. His Moon is 26degree 51 minutes in Taurus and Mars is 27 degrees 56 minutes in Libra. Gulshan Kumar has Moon at 28degree 53minutes in Virgo and Mars at 22degree 52minutes. Both Moon and the birth Mahadasa fall in the 4th part in D-4.

Examination of D-4
- Jupiter is the significator of happiness and is examined in D-4 for its status, placement, etc. Jupiter in 6,8,12 house gives despair for wealth. Mars is the significator built-up properties. Venus is for Luxuries and Vehicles, Moon for mental happiness and mother, Mercury for education, Saturn for friends and masses, the chance of residence after marriage for girls.

- Formation of Dhana yoga in D-4 assures wealth and happiness
- Presence of Rajayoga gives the enjoyment of wealth
- Mars is the significator of fixed assets. Strong Mars is a must of owing land/buildings. Mars in the 10th house of D-4 is the best placement for granting fixed assets.
- Tenth Lord of D-1 chart, if related to Lagna or Lagna lord of D-4 then a lot of income from properties is assured.
- Ketu in 4th house or related to 4th house gives loss of assets due to natural calamity.
- Transfers or movement away from home, happens when 3rd, 9th, and 12th houses are involved. Home posting is indicated by the relation of 2nd and 11th house with Lagna, 4th house or 8th house. The running dasa holds the clue. The dasa period should relate to these houses in D-1 and D-4 charts.
- If a movable sign falls in the 4th house and the fourth lord is also in the movable sign, then there is no permanent residence and the person is always on move. A fixed sign gives a permanent home.
- Lagna Lord of D-4 if occupy a benefic Shastiamsa it gives the permanent good house. If in malefic Shastiamsa then gives the temporary house.
- Aspect of Jupiter on Lagna of D-4 is a promise of happiness. If this Jupiter is also a trine Lord, then happiness is assured. Even when Jupiter is Kendra Lord, we can predict the happiness of material things.
- If the 12th Lord occupies the 4th house, the person lives in someone else house.
- D-4 is seen for the mother also. The mutual love and affection of the mother are present when Lagna Lord and 4th Lord are mutually well placed. When the 4th Lord is in the 8th from Lagna or in trik houses from Lagna Lord then there is enmity between them.
- The Fourth house stands for the character of a person. Moon is the karaka of mind. If Moon is afflicted, then the person is deceitful. Rahu in Lagna or 4th house makes a person look innocent but he is full of deceit.
- Comforts of life are the domain of Jupiter. When Jupiter is weak, there is malefic in the 4th house, 4th Lord weak and have malefic association then the life is uncomfortable
- 4th Lord in Upachaya houses gives many properties
- 4th Lord is badly placed in trik house, is debilitated or is in inimical sign and is in malefic Shashtiamsa then there is the loss of property. With the involvement of the 10th house and Sun or Mars then the loss is due to Government orders.
- Sale of property: 4th Lord is with a malefic and placed in the second house and is strong.
- Discontinuation of the family: When malefic is placed in Lagna, Moon in the fourth house, and malefics in the eleventh house.
- Happiness is not only property. One can get happiness from other sources also. For example, the source of happiness by Sun is from the father or Government.

In my opinion, the Parasara D-4 gives the overall view of the mental attitude and source of happiness. The cyclical D-4 shows materialistic happiness.
